Tubing and hose selection

All flexible tubing is measured in ID (or inner diameter). For example 1/4" tubing would be 1/4" ID tubing. The OD (or outer diameter) of your tubing depends on the tubing wall thickness.  Tubing Quality PVC tubing is rated 3-A, FDA, NSF, UL, USDA or none (no rating). Wall Thickness PVC tubing in smaller sizes is available with 1/16" (thin wall) or 1/8" (heavy wall). 1/16" thin wall tubing is more flexible but it will easily collapse when bent to tight or when warm. The best overall tubing is 1/8" heavy wall (or BIB) tubing and this is the only type of PVC tubing we sell. Braid Reinforced Braid reinforced is used where more rigidity or wear resistance is needed. The tubing trades off some flexibility for rigidity. Braid reinforced works great for the CO2 side of a kegerator and connecting your brew pot to your wurt chiller. Replacement Frequency Most liquid carrying PVC tubing should be replaced at least once a year. Long run braid reinforced tubing can be replaced less often providing the tubing is sanitized regularly with a food safe sanitizer (no bleach). Tubing is cheap and no-one wants a $4.00 section of contaminated tubing to ruin a batch of beer. Tubing and Clamp Selection Best selection depends on your needs. You should use USDA (food grade) tubing throughout your brewery and heavier wall tubing will give less trouble over time. Clamp selection depends on the OD (outer diameter) of your tubing. The following chart will help you select the correct tubing and the correct Oetiker clamps for your tubing. Type Size OD Use Clamp BIB 3/16" 9/16" Beer line - ads restriction, slowing down the beer on the way to the tap to help prevent foaming. 6' is needed for each tap to work properly. 14.0 mm or 13.3 mm Braid Reinforced 1/4" 1/2" Semi-rigid - used for gas or CO2 lines. Also used to run beer line long distances. 13.3 mm BIB 3/8" 5/16" 5/8" Both sizes used interchangeably. Used for draft beer CO2 lines (more flexible than 3/8" braid), transfer wurt and beer and small blow-off tube. 17.0 mm Braid Reinforced 3/8" 5/8" Semi-rigid - used for gas or CO2 lines. Also used to run wurt from the brew kettle to the wurt chiller. 17.0 mm BIB 1/2" 3/4" Beer transfer, blow off tube, drain line. 21.0 mm Our Tubing All of our PVC tubing is BIB tubing with 1/8" wall thickness. Our braid reinforced tubing is 1/8" or 3/16" wall thickness. All of our tubing is rated Food Grade and is used everywhere in the beverage industry.
