Hydroponics seems to be the latest up-coming thing, partly I'm sure because as of Feb 2012 Medical marijuana is legal in 17 states. A lot of homebrew shops have been moving into this market by offering items like hydroponics regulators and high intensity lighting.
But most items have always been available. Small scale hydroponics systems have also been available for years. And CO2 regulators & CO2 tanks have been available for years.
You could buy high intensity lights designed for plant growth from your local or on-line aquarium shop. But these usually generate a lot of heat and you could not place the light closer than about 2' from your plants. You also needed a exhaust fan to pull the heat out of the room or closet you were growing in. All of that heat also consumes power. Just turn on one of these HID style high intensity grow lights on, go outside and watch your power meter spin. Higher than normal utility bills is one method the Police use to find local grow houses.
All of this is about to change with the LED light revolution. LED grow lights provide the light you need, when you need it, but without the heat or energy use concerns. Now you can grow light loving indoor plants without killing your power bill. Just watch out - there are a lot of people out there selling LED plant lights that don't put out enough light. To effectively grow light loving plants indoors you need approximately 45 watts of targeted LED light per plant and most of that light needs to be red with a little blue mixed in.
But where is all of this heading? Stay posted - we just launched our own LED grow light and they will be available here soon
Note: Growing Medical marijuana is not legal in Alabama and we do not grow POT ourselves. I do grow legal tomatos and peppers indoors and will be happy to post pictures of what I grow when this year's plants are large enough to be impressive. Please do not send us questions about growing POT - we really can't help! |
